Whatever form of care is required, Heart Home Care is devoted to helping clients retain their health, freedom, and dignity—all in the comfort of their homes.
Heart Home Care delivers reassurance and confidence to families who are looking for personalized home care services in the Richmond and surrounding areas.
We are flexible. We provide around-the-clock care, ranging from 4 to 24 hours per day. We also do not require a long-term contract. Our service agreement can cover any increments 2 weeks – 2 years and beyond with no penalty for cancellation of services within 48 hours.
We come to you. Our clients live in a variety of settings. Some reside in their own homes, with a family member or in an assisted living or nursing facility. We can provide care wherever our clients call home.
We invoice you directly. All services are billed hourly. Medicare does not pay for non-medical home care services, so clients pay privately or pass costs through to participating long-term care insurance providers. We participate with most long-term care insurance companies and as a courtesy we will file the claim for you so you can be reimbursed.
We support clients with a team. Clients receive care from a team of caregivers, handpicked to meet each client’s individual needs and interests. If a caregiver is not a good fit for a client, we will replace him or her with a more compatible member of our team.
We have a process. Each care relationship begins with a visit from an experienced registered nurse (RN). Our RN will conduct a complimentary assessment of the client’s needs and create a custom plan of care. Every plan of care includes a comprehensive review of the client’s medical history and support requirements, as well as detailed information about household and personal preferences.
We perform screenings and test employees. In addition to our proprietary vetting process, every caregiver undergoes a pre-employment criminal background check, sexual misconduct search, driver and motor vehicle search, employment history verification, credential or certification verification and random drug testing.
We are trusted. Our company is licensed and insured. We maintain comprehensive insurance coverage as enforced by the Virginia Department of Health. Heart Home Care can ensure that clients and their families will feel at ease in our care.

As the Director of Operations and Development, I am proud to be part of a local, woman-owned business and look forward to making sincere connections with my community. With a background of 20+ years in healthcare, I have always enjoyed helping and caring for others. This is the perfect new journey for Heart Home Care and me.
I’m the new owner of Heart Home Care.
After working in the medical field for 27 years I finally decided that it was time for me to combine my experience and passion for helping others, I took off a few months and did some “soul searching”. My husband of 19 years helped me start my first vegetable garden. I spent some much-needed time with my 2 daughters, 2 dogs, 2 barn cats, 29 chickens and 1 rooster named, Worthless. I realized who and what was important in my life and my 81-year-old mother was at the top of that list.
My mother is one amazing lady. She was a significant role model and influencer to myself and so many other women. We owned a business together for 18 years, she dedicated her life to breast cancer survivors and our successful mastectomy boutique was the start of my amazing journey in the medical field. My mom retired, we sold the boutiques and I spent some time with my babies. In 2011 I went to work for a local medical equipment company as the account manager for VCU Health Systems. I learned so much during that time. I enjoyed the hustle and bustle of discharging patients home safely all over the state and even the east coast. I made many lifelong friends with coworkers, nurses, therapists, and physicians yet something was missing for me. The desk work was no longer fulfilling, and I yearned to be back out marketing and making hands on connections.
Then BOOM September 2020..... You can call it fate, faith, karma, or just pure luck but all the stars aligned for me when I was introduced to a woman that has changed my life in so many ways. Shari Mercer founded Heart Home Care in 2010. She has been the heart of this business for 11 wonderful years. Shari had a passion for working with the elderly and providing excellent care to clients and their families. Her company’s mission and energy were exactly what I wanted in my life. I started shadowing Shari and in January of 2021 I became the new owner of Heart Home Care. I can hear Shari saying, “If you wouldn’t allow the caregiver to help your own mother then we won't let them service our clients.” I am over the moon happy to be surrounded by some of the most compassionate caregivers in the Richmond area. I'm excited about my future. I've not only found myself but my passion in life. What a great feeling to be so blessed.
My mission as the new owner of Heart Home Care is to provide compassionate care for adults and seniors. We have a unique team approach and I will be involved every step of the way. I'm excited to build a locally owned business. Now more than ever I believe it is important to support my local communities right here in Richmond area.
